Diabetes - Myths About Eating and Traveling

You will find a lot of myths about diabetes just like other things in life. In particular, it is often said that diabetics do not have the freedom to eat whatever they want or travel whenever they want.

Lose Freedom in Eating

It’s a myth to say that diabetics do not have the freedom to eat what they want. Life has offered everyone the gift of food. It is not true that if you have diabetes then you cannot eat many different types of food whenever you desire.

It’s true, however, that you have to balance and control your insulin intake with the food you consume if you are a type 1 diabetic. With advances in medicine, you can eat a large variety of foods as long as you take the proper dose of insulin during, before or after you consume your meal.

The type 2 diabetic has oral technologies available to help in their eating process. It enables you to anticipate the range of your blood glucose level relative to the food you eat.

Lose Freedom in Traveling

It’s a myth to say that diabetics do not have the freedom to travel whenever they want. In general, many of the diabetics believe they don’t have the ability to travel whenever they want. If you prepare in advance and be careful, you should be able to take short trips without worry. However, it is essential that the diabetic adhere to the following:

1. Make certain your glucose level is under control before you take either a short car trip or a long airplane trip.

2. Make certain you keep your diabetic medications with you at all times. On an airplane trip, do not store your medications in bulk luggage but keep it with your carry-on personal belongings. This will enable you to get your medications quickly if you need them during the trip.

3. Make certain to locate a doctor in advance to a trip to a domestic or foreign location that is fluent in your native language. This will help ensure that you have a doctor to see in a diabetes emergency while at your destination.
